Happy Mahavir Jayanti 2024 / Mahavir Jayanti History

Mahavir Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Mahavir, who was born as Vardhamana Mahavira in 599 BCE in present-day Bihar, India. He was the 24th and last Tirthankara (spiritual teacher) in Jainism, following a lineage of enlightened beings.

Lord Mahavir was born into the royal family of King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. His birth name was Vardhamana, which means "one who grows" or "prosperous." Even from a young age, he showed signs of spiritual inclination and a deep concern for all living beings.

At the age of 30, after renouncing his princely status, Vardhamana Mahavira embarked on a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment. For the next twelve and a half years, he practiced intense meditation, self-discipline, and austerities, ultimately attaining Kevala Jnana, or omniscience, at the age of 42.

Mahavira then spent the rest of his life traveling across ancient India, preaching his philosophy and teachings, which emphasized the principles of ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truthfulness), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (chastity), and aparigraha (non-attachment). His teachings were primarily aimed at achieving spiritual liberation and leading a life of ethical and moral purity.

Mahavira's teachings laid the foundation for Jainism, which emphasizes non-violence, compassion, and spiritual evolution. He passed away at the age of 72, having attained Moksha (liberation) from the cycle of birth and death.

Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated with great fervor by Jains worldwide, honoring Lord Mahavir's life, teachings, and spiritual legacy. It serves as a time for reflection, prayer, and renewal of commitment to the principles of Jainism.
